4 Ways Your Heating System Can Save You This Winter

There is no denying that winter comes with a steep increase in heating costs, but you can combat those costs by taking preventive measures now.  Planning and scheduling an HVAC maintenance checkup, you can take steps to ensure your heating system works as efficiently as possible, saving you money this winter and for years to come.

Here are four ways your heating system can save you this winter.

Feel and Listen
A good first step is to simply turn the system to heating mode and listen for unusual noises.  Check to feel for warm air blowing from the registers.  Try and track down the source of any noises.

Clean the Coils
Dust can build up on the evaporator coils inside the air handler, creating an insulating layer that will hurt your heat pump’s efficiency.  Use a dusting brush and a shop-vac to clean the coils.  Also, clean the drain pan beneath the unit and make sure the drain plug is clear of obstructions and letting condensation flow freely.

Change the Filters
Changing your air filter every month helps prevent dust and other airborne particles from building up inside your unit.  Not only can these irritants clog your air ducts, but they can also reduce airflow by as much as 30 percent.

Reset the Thermostat
Briefly run the system in heat mode to be sure the controls are operating correctly.  A broken thermostat can take the entire system down.

Some of the tips listed above are easy and some might be hard.  If you are unsure of how to perform the tasks, it is best to hire an HVAC professional to perform routine maintenance for you.  They will perform a routine check and inspection of your entire system.  From checking the refrigerant to checking ductwork for possible leaks; cleaning the blower fan and compressor to cycling the dampers.

Proper maintenance can prolong your system’s life and cut your heating costs by 5 to 40 percent while keeping your heat pump and furnace in shape for winter season.
