Heroes Spotlight: Meet Air Force Veteran Anthony Cubbage

Anthony Cubbage enlisted in the Air Force from Missouri as a Nuclear Weapons Specialist. He served in the Air Force for 14 years before he was medically retired. He has been stationed in New Mexico, California, Missouri, and Turkey.

His first duty station was Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was during his second duty station in Incirlik Air Base, Turkey that he met his wife Amanda, who is still serving on active duty in the Air Force. They have been married for just shy of 12 years.

After Anthony retired, he followed his wife to her duty stations, while he floated between government and civilian jobs. However, nothing really fulfilled him.

Then they moved to Stafford, Virginia in 2019, where he started taking veterans out to fishing trips via a volunteer organization. This sparked a passion in Anthony.

After talking it over with his wife, and getting encouragement from fellow veterans that he needed to get paid for these trips, he decided to launch Atomic Fishing Charters.

He went to school, got his captain's license, and received his Coat Guard Certification. However, he did know much about starting a business. This is where he discovered a non-profit organization called Warrior Rising. Through this non-profit organization, which mentors veterans on the foundations of starting a business he developed a strong business plan.

The organization provided Anthony with business education and the opportunity for him to compete for a grant when he attended their first business show in April 2021.

Atomic Fishing Charters launched in 2022 with fishing options for all party sizes.

The options are

  1. Bowfishing- where you head out at night and fish with bows and arrows- no game fish are taken, it provides a positive impact on the ecosystem. Anthony says, “Most fun and frustrating thing you can do on the water.”

  2. Half-day cat fishing charter 5 hours long

  3. Full-day cat fishing 10-hour trip

  4. Your choice finishing- bring your own equipment, and Anthony just captains the boat 4 hours

  5. Family day ride on the boat- swim- beaches only accessible by boat

  6. Booze cruise- ride the waves with a cocktail

He trailers all his boats so he can launch from some of the popular locations around the area.

Anthony offers a 50% discount to veteran 501c3 non-profit organizations so that the fishing trips are free for veterans and they have a choice of what charter they would like to do.

They have recently partnered with Comanche Outdoors, a non-profit organization that supports veterans and first responders.

Anthony did not let his disability stop him from pursuing his passions. To learn more about Atomic Fishing Charters please visit their website About Us | Atomic Fishing Charters

Liz Hensel - Content Coordinator

Liz has been living in the Stafford area for the last two years. However, her ties are rooted to Virginia, as Virginia was her first duty station while she was on active duty with the Marine Corps. Her husband is still on active duty, and they hope to make Stafford their forever home with their two daughters and two rescue dogs.

While serving in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps reserves has allowed Liz to see all parts of the country and the world, there is truly no place like home. Working on this magazine gives Liz the opportunity to meet her neighbors and the local businesses and more importantly, she gets to showcase them to others.

Liz is also the founder of a nonprofit called Leave No Paws Behind USA. She led the campaign to have legislative change to include pet transportation fees included in military moves. With her leadership, the bill was passed in the FY23 National Defense Appropriation Act.

Liz is excited to continue to write the stories of the FXBG Neighbors
