IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE: Coquito

Written by Liz Hensel

Holidays in my family mean cinnamon and cinnamon sticks are coming out of the cupboard. The aroma fills the house as my grandmother prepares her homemade coquito.

Coquito is a staple holiday drink in our household. No Thanksgiving or Holiday party is complete without one of these traditional homemade bottles.

Here is my coquito recipe. Enjoy a wonderful holiday season and if you make your own make sure to tag us! @fxbgneighbors

Ingredients:

14oz sweetened condensed milk

12 oz evaporated milk

15 oz cream of coconut

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 cinnamon sticks

¼ tsp ground cloves

12 oz of rum of your choice

Instructions:

  1. Combine all of the ingredients EXCEPT the cinnamon sticks, in the blender and pulse for few seconds until completely comes together and smooth.

  2. Transfer the mixture into a glass jar with a lid, bottle, or a pitcher.

  3. Refrigerate for up to 4 hours, until completely chilled throughout.

  4. Shake it up before serving.

  5. Pour into glasses and garnish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and the cinnamon stick.

Note: I usually make 2 or 3 bottles the night before my Holiday dinner. This will make the drink a little more concentrated and the extra chill adds a delicious effect.

Liz Hensel - Content Coordinator

Liz has been living in the Stafford area for the last two years. However, her ties are rooted to Virginia, as Virginia was her first duty station while she was on active duty with the Marine Corps. Her husband is still on active duty, and they hope to make Stafford their forever home with their two daughters and two rescue dogs.

While serving in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps reserves has allowed Liz to see all parts of the country and the world, there is truly no place like home. Working on this magazine gives Liz the opportunity to meet her neighbors and the local businesses and more importantly, she gets to showcase them to others.

Liz is also the founder of a nonprofit called Leave No Paws Behind USA. She led the campaign to have legislative change to include pet transportation fees included in military moves. With her leadership, the bill was passed in the FY23 National Defense Appropriation Act.

Liz is excited to continue to write the stories of the FXBG Neighbors
