Charity Spotlight: Here for the Girls

As we wrap up Breast Cancer Awareness Month, breast cancer can happen anytime at any age. This month, we are highlighting a local nonprofit that assists young women affected by breast cancer.

Here for the Girls, “H4TG,” was founded in July of 2007 with the mission; “To improve the lives of young women affected by breast cancer.”

What started with two young breast cancer survivors meeting at a retreat evolved into a thriving organization supporting young women to help them love and support each other through an unexpected and life-altering breast cancer diagnosis.

H4TG is celebrating its 17 years of “living life with an exclamation point” by continuing the tradition of producing a health guide disguised as a calendar.
Since 2008, the calendar has featured young women with breast cancer, sharing their stories and inspiring everyone who views it.

The women in the H4TG Calendar represent:

1. Those we lost.
2. Those we serve.
3. Those who don’t even know they need us yet.

The calendar offers newly diagnosed women something more - hope – and access to an immediate sisterhood. The detachable Guide to Caring for Yourself is where important health information is shared for all women to be aware of.
H4TG sees success as having a young woman go to her appointments and put her health first! Early detection truly saves lives. Having members say they do not feel alone is something dear to their hearts.

At Here for the Girls, they say, “It takes a village to raise a non-profit,” and they are so grateful for their “village” of supporters who share their time, talents, and treasure with them to support their mission and the women in the community.

Support comes from businesses, community organizations, individuals, and families, all coming together to make a difference in the lives of young women with breast cancer and their families.

Liz Hensel - Content Coordinator

Liz has been living in the Stafford area for the last two years. However, her ties are rooted to Virginia, as Virginia was her first duty station while she was on active duty with the Marine Corps. Her husband is still on active duty, and they hope to make Stafford their forever home with their two daughters and two rescue dogs.

While serving in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps reserves has allowed Liz to see all parts of the country and the world, there is truly no place like home. Working on this magazine gives Liz the opportunity to meet her neighbors and the local businesses and more importantly, she gets to showcase them to others.

Liz is also the founder of a nonprofit called Leave No Paws Behind USA. She led the campaign to have legislative change to include pet transportation fees included in military moves. With her leadership, the bill was passed in the FY23 National Defense Appropriation Act.

Liz is excited to continue to write the stories of the FXBG Neighbors
