Introducing the Pounds Family: A Tale of Passion, Baking, and Community

Since 2018, the Pounds family has proudly called Liberty Knolls their home. Nikia and Jason are the loving parents to their children Jasmine (13), Nicholas (10), and Jaxson (3), along with their beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Benji.

While Nikia describes herself as the "shy one" in comparison to her husband Jason, her remarkable achievements speak otherwise. Nikia graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Alexandria, Virginia, before pursuing her education at Hampton University, a renowned Historically Black University, where she graduated as part of the class of 2002.

Hampton University holds a special place in the Pounds family's heart, as it is where Nikia and Jason crossed paths during a Human Resources business class. Their love story has flourished over the past 15 years of marriage. Before their beautiful children came into their lives, the couple enjoyed mini-vacations, where their competitive spirits thrived through weekend sporting events. While they may have differing opinions on who triumphed in most of these competitions, it's evident that Nikia emerged as the victor.

That influential Human Resources class left a lasting impact on Nikia. For more than 15 years, she has served as a Human Resource Executive, leading the Human Capital Management Division for a local government contracting firm, an International Manufacturing company, as well as various IT startups. Nikia holds two esteemed certifications in the field of Human Resources: the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®) from HRCI and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) from SHRM.

Despite her success in the Human Resources field, Nikia decided to pursue her true passion: baking. She embarked on a new journey by opening her own boutique-style bakery known as Pounds Bakery. Over the past 8 years, Pounds Bakery has delighted residents of DC, Maryland, and Virginia with its custom and specialty made-to-order desserts. Nikia's expertise knows no bounds when it comes to baking, whether it's crafting cupcakes, cookies, cake pops, or cakes for any occasion. Her delectable creations have graced venues such as Potomac Vineyard and Winery, 718 Venue, and the Pavilion at Weatherly Farm, among others.

Beyond her expertise as an executive and baker, Nikia actively participates in her children's activities and engages with her local community. Currently, she serves on the Homeowners Association Board for her neighborhood and is also a board member of a Stafford, VA based organization, A Child for All, a nonprofit organization that supports vulnerable children in Mali through educational and agricultural programs.

Jasmine, a rising 8th grader, recently achieved induction into the National Jr. Honors Society and has been elected as the Historian for the upcoming year. Maintaining a consistent A/B honor roll, Jasmine completed the 7th grade with a remarkable 4.0+ GPA. Her passion for reading shines through, and she particularly enjoys her debate class. Additionally, Jasmine takes pleasure in playing volleyball.

Nicholas, a rising 5th grader, finds joy in video games, drawing, and swimming.

As the youngest member of the family, Jaxson is always immersed in exploring the world, acquiring knowledge, and trying to be the boss of the family.

Settling down in Liberty Knolls was an effortless decision for the Pounds family. The neighborhood's pleasant atmosphere, diversity, and friendly neighbors appealed to them, as did the spaciousness of the development. They hold a special fondness for the community events hosted by their neighborhood, with Halloween being their absolute favorite.

“Halloween is the absolute best! Everyone comes out and it’s a collective effort to make things fun.”

-Nikia Pounds

While Halloween holds a special place in their hearts, Christmas reigns as their favorite holiday. Every year, the family hosts a themed Christmas celebration, welcoming between 25-30 friends. They spare no effort in creating a magical experience, adorning both the interior and exterior of their home with decorations. Nikia prepares a themed breakfast and dinner, and the highlight is an extravagant dessert station brimming with a variety of sweet treats. Last year's theme revolved around "The Grinch that Stole Christmas." As for this year's theme? Well, that remains a delightful mystery. Also, can we get an invite?

When not immersed in holiday festivities, engaging in sports, or achieving academic accolades, the Pounds family cherishes their game nights, relishing friendly competition. They also enjoy horseback riding, traveling, and indulging in their love for food. Nikia, in particular, revels in exploring new restaurants and attempting to recreate the flavors of her favorite dishes at home.

During their family trip to the Dominican Republic last year, swimming with dolphins proved to be an unforgettable experience for the entire family.

If you happen to encounter the Pounds family while strolling around the neighborhood, don't hesitate to say hello! They genuinely appreciate spending time with friends and neighbors.

Nikia's transition from a seasoned HR Executive of over 15 years to a bakery business owner exemplifies that it's never too late to pursue your passion. She serves as living proof of this philosophy.

Liz Hensel - Content Coordinator

Liz has been living in the Stafford area for the last two years. However, her ties are rooted to Virginia, as Virginia was her first duty station while she was on active duty with the Marine Corps. Her husband is still on active duty, and they hope to make Stafford their forever home with their two daughters and two rescue dogs.

While serving in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps reserves has allowed Liz to see all parts of the country and the world, there is truly no place like home. Working on this magazine gives Liz the opportunity to meet her neighbors and the local businesses and more importantly, she gets to showcase them to others.

Liz is also the founder of a nonprofit called Leave No Paws Behind USA. She led the campaign to have legislative change to include pet transportation fees included in military moves. With her leadership, the bill was passed in the FY23 National Defense Appropriation Act.

Liz is excited to continue to write the stories of the FXBG Neighbors
