Kids Corner: On A Rainy Day Bring the Beach To You

As a Kindergarten teacher, especially after COVID, it’s important to bring play back into education. By doing this, and sparking children’s imagination, they’ll be socially and emotionally ready to learn.

I tend to take a thematic approach to my teaching. For example, the other week, I implemented a beach theme in the classroom. Everyone got sunglasses, brought a beach towel, and we read beach themed books, made a beach scene with shapes since we are currently in our geometry unit, and had a beach themed snack.

Craft Materials:

Shape cut outs or shape stickers.

Crayons

Paper

Glue stick

Instructions:

Make a scene and pretend you’re at the beach. It’s open ended and use your imagination. Extend the activity by writing a story about your collage.

Ocean Snack Ingredients:

Graham crackers

Icing

Blue food coloring

Swedish fish

Directions:

  1. Dye the icing blue with food coloring

  2. Spread on a graham cracker

  3. Add some fish to your ocean
