Kids Corner: Let’s Talk Feelings

With the new school year approaching our little ones (and maybe not so little ones) can be experiencing some big feelings.

This happened to us when we had a major military move from California to Japan. Our daughter did not have the terminology to tell us how she was feeling from that move, and it manifested in different ways.

That is how we learned about the feelings thermometer. An excellent tool for the family to check our feelings when big things are happening around us.

Starting a new school?

Making new friends?

Meeting new teachers?

All these things can be a little daunting, so this is a nice craft activity that you can use throughout the school year.

Feelings Thermometer

Craft Materials:

Construction paper

Scissors

Colored markers

Tape

Magnet

Directions:

Step 1. Trace out the shape of a thermometer on a piece of construction paper

Step 2. Using a marker divide the thermometer into 4 sections

Step 3. Color your thermometer, green at the bottom, followed by yellow and orange and red is at the tippy top.

Step 4. Tape the thermometer on the refrigerator or central located area.

Step 5. Use the magnet to place where “the feelings” are for the day.

Green is for a happy day; Red is for I am not having a good day.

It’s a great way to check in on our feelings when we aren’t ready to talk about them yet.

Liz Hensel - Content Coordinator

Liz has been living in the Stafford area for the last two years. However, her ties are rooted to Virginia, as Virginia was her first duty station while she was on active duty with the Marine Corps. Her husband is still on active duty, and they hope to make Stafford their forever home with their two daughters and two rescue dogs.

While serving in the Marine Corps and Marine Corps reserves has allowed Liz to see all parts of the country and the world, there is truly no place like home. Working on this magazine gives Liz the opportunity to meet her neighbors and the local businesses and more importantly, she gets to showcase them to others.

Liz is also the founder of a nonprofit called Leave No Paws Behind USA. She led the campaign to have legislative change to include pet transportation fees included in military moves. With her leadership, the bill was passed in the FY23 National Defense Appropriation Act.

Liz is excited to continue to write the stories of the FXBG Neighbors
