What is Pilates and What Can it do For Me?

Pilates is a full-body workout that incorporates elements of strength, flexibility, stability, core activation, balance, and functional movement.  Suitable for all fitness levels, the exercises work the body against spring resistance and keep muscles in constant motion under tension.  Repeated patterns of movement create muscle memory, giving the individual greater control over their body and an enhanced feeling of connectedness and coordination.

Here are some testimonials from Club Pilates Stafford members:

Problem: Diminished Range of Motion, Back Pain

I am a 60yr old construction worker who started Pilates out of desperation. I was so stiff that getting out of bed had my piriformis hurting so badly I'd limp to the truck to go to work. My daughter fussed at me until I finally started Pilates, going once a week.
After only 8 classes my hip mobility and back pain have improved 75%.  After 7 years of backaches I am actually feeling pretty flexible and walking without pain.  Orthopedics had not helped, including shots and physical therapy.  My pain was all muscle related, needing only strength exercises for my core.  - Ron

Problem: Arthritis, Pain, Weakness

I was having a lot of trouble bending my knees due to arthritis.  Now I can squat without pain.   I also have a problem with fallen arches, causing pain when I first put my feet on the equipment.  Now I have no pain.  Also, my arms are getting stronger.  - Alyce

Problem: Injury

The targeted exercises in Pilates helped strengthen the muscles surrounding my shoulder joint (where I had persistent pain), enhancing stability and flexibility. Through learning proper body alignment and consistent practice, I not only experienced diminished discomfort but also gained a heightened awareness of my body mechanics. Pilates became a holistic approach, not just addressing the symptoms but fostering overall well-being, ultimately enhancing my daily life and physical resilience.  - Ali

Problem: Weight Gain, Loss of Flexibility

I hit middle age and realized that while I was financially prepared for retirement, my body was a mess.  I was overweight and tired.  Pilates looked expensive, but I thought it worth the investment in my body now; if I waited, it might be too late.  I signed up for twice a week, enough for an honest try.  In the first class, my back even spasmed!  But I kept going, I could do the classes; I was feeling small gains. My improvements began to snowball; I started making healthier choices and suddenly realized I had lost 30 lbs.!

Recently I helped out at the scene of an accident.  Later I realized I had stayed in a squatted position for about 25 minutes, using my core and endurance to help out another person – I could not do this before Pilates.

I have a nice new group of friends at the studio, which was completely unexpected and a welcome bonus.  If you are in doubt, give it a try, you won’t regret it!  - Janet
