Contractor Shopping: How to Choose the Right One
Here is a list of a few things you should know and consider when looking to hire a contractor for a project at your home.
PRICE
Most contractors figure out their pricing based on cost of materials, labor, insurance, complexity of the project. Project costs can increase due to a contractor having their own crew versus, a contractor that needs sub-contract portions of the project. Always ask if they will be performing the work themselves or if they need to hire and sublet part of the job.
COMMUNICATION
Communication is key throughout the entire project, from quoting the project to completion. If communication is breaking down prior to the project starting, take note, that could mean some red flags. A good contractor will have great communication with you, from listening to your needs, explaining the quote, laying out a timeline and providing status of your project.
KNOWLEDGE
During your search and interviewing potential contractors, ask questions. Being able to answer your questions in term you can understand and without hesitation, will help you figure out how much knowledge and experience the contractor has with the project you would like done.
REVIEWS
Check reviews from multiple locations. From Facebook to Google to Angie’s List to Yelp. Any experienced contractor should have tons of reviews out there. With some reviews, you can click on the reviewer and see other places they left reviews, to verify if the reviewer is a real person. Bonus point if a reviewer posts pictures of the before and after of the contractor’s project.
PAST WORK/REFERRALS
Most contractors have websites and Facebook pages where you can review photos of past work. You can also ask for referrals to speak with before moving forward.
LICENSED & INSURED
While most general contractors are licensed and insurance, you should verify that they are. After major storms, when houses take on damage, doorknockers can pop-up to quote your project fast because they know you need to taken care of immediately. Don’t be scammed.
BOTTOM LINE…make sure you are 100% comfortable with the contractor you decide to work with.
