Parents Education Corner: New Year ~ New Opportunities for All Ages

New Year ~ New Opportunities for All Ages

Happy New Year! Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet? It is important for families to set goals together. Students of all ages can set personal and educational goals. Do you already do this? If so, that is fantastic. If not, why not start now? It’s a new year.

Here are a few examples:

  • Have a family meeting and say it’s a new year and I/we want to know what your goals are for school, extracurriculars, etc?

  • Talk about your own personal goals.

  • Ask your child what his/her goals are for school? Is it to improve a grade or to join a club or team?

  • Ask your child what his/her personal goals are? Is it to keep his/her room clean, exercise, meet someone new in their grade level or class? Is it to set an appointment with their high school counselor or college advisor?

  • Set a time to meet with your child individually to talk about their goals. This takes the pressure away from those annoying siblings teasing them or interrupting them while they share this information with you. Ask how you can help them achieve their goals and when they want to accomplish them. An example is a first grader that wants to get all 3’s or A’s during the next quarter or the high school student that wants to improve their grade in chemistry or to ask three teachers for letters of recommendation.

Achieving a goal is success. It’s a new year. Go for it.
