Through the Lens of Love: The Presecan Family's Story
The Presecan family of Stafford, Virginia, exemplifies a life enriched by a passion for animals, photography, and community. Karen and Hank Presecan, along with their children, Jackson and Vivian, have called Stafford home since 1999, when the Marine Corps first brought them to the area. Over the years, they have built a life rooted in their love for family, the natural world, and meaningful connections.
Karen and Hank’s story began in Sneads Ferry, North Carolina, at a small veterinary clinic where Karen worked as a veterinary assistant, technician, and office manager. “Hank was stationed at Camp Lejeune and brought his cat into the clinic,” Karen recalls with a smile. Their connection blossomed from that first encounter, leading to a life of adventure and shared purpose.
Hank’s impressive career started with a Bachelor of Science in Ocean Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1995. After seven years of active duty in the Marine Corps, Hank transitioned to the reserves, where he has served as a drilling reservist and plans to retire this June. Alongside his military career, he works as a project manager for a defense contracting company, combining his leadership skills with technical expertise. Meanwhile, Karen pursued her passion for biology and zoology, earning her degree from Methodist College in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Later, she added teaching credentials from the University of North Carolina Wilmington before turning her lifelong love for animals and photography into a successful business.
“I started my photography business in 2008,” Karen shares, “and achieved my Master Photographer credential in 2020.”
A love for animals is a defining feature of Karen’s life and the Presecan household. Through her photography, Karen has devoted countless hours to helping shelters and rescues find homes for adoptable animals.
“Helping animals has always been a part of who I am,” she says. The family has also fostered pets and participated in rescue transport, providing temporary homes and safe journeys for animals in need. Their current furry family member is Piper, a spirited English Setter they initially fostered. “After we lost our beloved dogs, Boomer and Clyde, to old age, fostering Piper helped us heal,” Karen explains. “She was supposed to be transported to a rescue in Ohio, but when her flight was canceled due to weather, we knew she was meant to stay with us.”
The opportunity to blend her love for photography with her commitment to animal welfare is something Karen treasures deeply. Their children, Jackson and Vivian, have inherited their parents’ drive and passion, following their own diverse interests.
Jackson, 20, studies aerospace engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. A talented musician, he played in his high school’s band and marching band, a passion he continued at college in the university’s pep band.
Vivian, 14, is a Brooke Point High School freshman who shares her brother’s love for music. “She joined the marching band, just like Jackson, and she loves it,” Karen says. Vivian is also a dedicated dancer, having trained at Stafford Dance Company since she was three years old. Now part of the studio’s competition team, she balances her artistic pursuits with her academic commitments.
Both Jackson and Vivian spent years playing soccer with Stafford Soccer, where Hank coached their teams for more than a decade. “It was such a joy for Hank to coach them,” Karen reflects. “Those years were filled with so many special memories.”
When it comes to travel, the Presecans prioritize meaningful experiences and cultural exploration. “My college best friend is Bahamian, and visiting her in Nassau was what first gave me the travel bug,” Karen shares. “She showed me parts of her country that tourists don’t see, and that’s always been important to us—to share our love for travel and other cultures with Jackson and Vivian.” Their most recent trip abroad took them to Paris and the beaches of Normandy, where they honored Hank’s grandfather, who served with the First Infantry Division during World War II. “It was a powerful experience,” Karen says.
That trip also provided the opportunity for the beautiful photograph that graces this month’s cover. “We were a little rushed– you know how tourist sites can be overwhelming with everyone trying to get the perfect shot,” Karen explains, “but I love capturing our memories wherever our family goes.” Not only does the photograph reflect Karen’s love and talent as a photographer, but Vivian’s passion and love for ballet as well. Mom and daughter doing what they love in the “City of Love,” what could be more perfect?
When they aren’t pursuing their passions or traveling abroad, the Presecans enjoy quick getaways to North Topsail Beach in North Carolina, which holds a special place in their hearts. The beach is near Karen’s parents and Hank’s first home, which they still own. “It’s a place where we can relax and reconnect as a family,” Karen explains. “We’ve spent so many wonderful vacations there.”
The Presecans’ connection to Stafford runs deep, too, and they cherish the area’s natural beauty and rich history. “We love the seasons of Virginia,” Karen says. “Living here puts us close to so much history and professional opportunity, and we appreciate the cultural diversity in our community.” The family frequently enjoys walking Stafford’s trails and exploring the surrounding area. Hank and Karen are also passionate supporters of local businesses, particularly those owned by friends.
“We’re big fans of Adventure Brewing and Full Distance Brewery,” Karen notes. “Both are amazing places for people who love good beer and good company.” The family’s other local favorites include Stafford Dance Company, Olla Bar, and the many small businesses that make Stafford unique.
Their commitment to our unique community is evident as well. Karen’s photography work, which often includes capturing images of adoptable animals, reflects her belief in giving back. Jackson’s volunteer work at the SPCA during middle and high school further underscores their family’s dedication to helping animals in need. “It’s something we all care deeply about,” Karen says.
The Presecans remain grounded by their love for one another and shared experiences through all their pursuits. Whether it’s cheering for Vivian at a dance competition, supporting Jackson’s academic achievements, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at one of Stafford’s local breweries, they approach life with gratitude and joy.
As Hank prepares to retire from the Marine Corps, the family looks forward to the next chapter in their journey. With their deep roots in Stafford and unwavering dedication to one another, the Presecans exemplify what it means to be a part of this vibrant community.
“Family means everything to us,” Karen reflects. “We feel so fortunate to have built a life here in Stafford, surrounded by such a supportive community.”
