Meet the Colsons: How This Family Honors the Military and their Community

Registered nurses by trade, Corey, an outdoorsman and avid hunter, and Meghan, a skilled archer who loves to read, met one fateful day in the hospital's critical care unit where they were working. They bonded over a shared passion in working for local hospitals and building leadership programs - the rest is history.

They have been together for ten blissful years, during which they have raised three beautiful daughters – Kendall, Holland, and Lana. Kendall, their oldest, plays volleyball and is a budding actress, playing roles in the local Christian Youth Theater chapter's version of Frozen, Jr. and Charlotte's Web. She aspires to go to Bowdoin College in Corey’s home state of Maine and then on to law school. Holland, their middle child, is a graceful ballerina with dreams of becoming a veterinarian, a hairstylist, and a chef when she grows up. Their youngest, Lana, is a swimmer, a gymnast, a unicorn collector, and a chocolate milk connoisseur.

Their beloved pets are an essential part of their family as well. Mumford, a German Shepard, is the protector of the home and takes his position as the Guardian of the Family very seriously. Molly Mae, a ragdoll cat, is not answering questions at this time but still plays an integral role in the family dynamic.

Corey and Meghan credit their successful marriage to the fact that they are always learning how to walk with God while enjoying every moment of life. They strike the perfect balance between hard work and fun to create an environment for their girls that envelops them in a circle of safety and trust. Their main goal is to ensure their daughters feel protected and provided for while being free to grow, learn, and find a true sense of belonging and self-worth.

The Colsons prioritize quality time with their family, making the most of every moment. As the saying goes, "The days are long, but the years are short." Corey and Meghan take this advice to heart – whether that means packing a bag and taking a spontaneous family vacation or just enjoying a typical day at home. Corey and Meghan believe that even the simplest moments can create meaningful memories.

These self-proclaimed homebodies love cooking, lounging by the pool, or exploring the river on their property. They also love days at Wilderness Run Vineyards to listen to the live bands that play there. On the occasional kid-free evening, they enjoy a quiet date night at La Petite Auberge or a great steak at Fahrenheit 132. While they are perfectly content to spend time at home, this family also loves to travel. Their favorite place to have some fun in the sun is Norris Lake, TN. It is a treasured place for Corey, as he spent many summers there with his family when he was young. Seeing his kids have fun in the same place he visited at their age brings him joy. The Colsons value the traditions of their past while creating new memories with their family. They have traveled together to various locations in the continental U.S., Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, and Cancun, Mexico. They look forward to stamping their passports in France, Greece, Egypt, and Jordan.

While Meghan was born and raised here in Fredericksburg, Corey's father's military career allowed the family to travel the globe from California to Bahrain before Corey eventually settled down here in 2008. Their home in Spotsylvania County is their oasis, with a property that backs up to a lush forest boasting a river and countless wildlife sightings. The Colsons are deeply grateful for their home, which grants them serenity and peace from the stresses of life every time they step into their backyard. As Meghan beautifully states, "I am convinced we live in heaven if heaven were a place in the U.S." The family will often spend time sitting by the river, marveling at the beauty of nature, while trying to spot the local deer, turkey, birds, foxes, coyotes, and bears in the distance.

They are so grateful to be living here. Their steadfast beliefs, strong work ethic, and a "never-give-up" attitude helped them realize their dream. Not a day goes by when they don't thank God for their blessings.

For those considering a move to Fredericksburg, the Colsons encourage you to delve into the town's rich history. Some of the largest gold reserves and precious metals were found in Spotsylvania County. This land has also been used as deer hunting grounds by some of the oldest documented Native American Tribes.

As you enjoy the peace and tranquility of the wilderness, they preach the benefits of rest and refreshment so that you may go forth and be the best version of yourself. Meghan says, "Your home is truly the wellspring for the rest of your life. What abounds there will overflow to all you touch and interact with elsewhere."

The family treats their property with the utmost respect and reverence as they ponder the complex history of the land. Walking amongst the remnants of Civil War trenches along their property, they can envision the Confederate troops struggling as they battled not only the Union soldiers but illness and brutally cold weather. This perspective beholden them to the military folk of yesterday and today – which is why their business honors the men and women of the military.

Corey and Meghan dedicate themselves to running their successful business - BallistiX Coatings & Sealers. Which specializes in Epoxy, Polished Concrete and Stonework. Every aspect of BallistiX is an ode to Corey's father and his venerable military career. Corey's father is a decorated career Marine and a brilliant man who influenced Corey's life immeasurably. He served in many capacities and specialized in Counter-Technology and EMP Ballistics Technology. He participated in the selective MECEP Program, for which only 2% of Marine applicants get accepted, and then became a pilot for EA6B. After a successful career in diplomacy, he retired as a commanding officer of the Weapons Battalion.

When Corey and Meghan developed their tough, versatile product line, they knew they would name the company in a way that would honor Corey's father and all of the great men and women who serve our country. Thus, BallistiX was born. They are proud military supporters and have a strong sense of pride in their family members who have served bravely.

Joseph Weaver, Meghan's father, stands not only as their greatest supporter but was also instrumental in launching the business. A retired millwright and a local, Joseph has deep ties to this region. Beyond family ties, he holds the title of Corey's best friend. Meghan's selfless spirit is a direct reflection of the values she learned from her father. Whether it's a game, an event, or a moment to assist someone, Joseph never misses out. In 2017, he faced a heart-wrenching loss when Meghan’s stepmom succumbed to brain cancer. From that point onward, he vowed to be a beacon of hope and assistance to those around him. His typical day involves ferrying his group of elderly friends to their appointments, showcasing his enduring generosity. An injury from twenty years ago hasn't slowed him down a bit. He and Corey share cherished memories, from hunting adventures to mutual hobbies. Joseph emerges as a beacon of reliability in their life. To many, he is the epitome of an exceptional individual. Corey’s robust work ethic and aspirations as a family person can be credited to Joseph's influence.

The Colsons are no strangers to sacrifice, as it takes immense hard work to run a successful business, but they are exceedingly grateful to be in that position. They commit wholeheartedly to running their company while balancing their work and family lives. Family time is the foundation of their home and business success. They intentionally make time for the people that matter most to create a loving sense of community.

The Colson family believes in supporting their neighbors and instilling a strong sense of community. They try to stay open to the call to serve and give back whenever possible. If someone in their community needs help, they pray about it and work as a family to respond. As a young couple working to make ends meet, Corey and Meghan have been on the receiving end of help from their community. So, they understand how important it is to be there for one another.

Now that you've gotten to know the Colson Family a little better, they'd like to leave you with this: If you see them wandering around town, please stop by and say hello. There is always room for one more!
